Om Château Giscours

Grand Vin: Château Giscours, Margaux 3. Cru Classé (1855 Médoc & Graves)
2. Vin: Sirene de Giscours, Margaux
Beliggenhed: Labarde, AOP Margaux
Beplantet areal: 94 ha
Plantede druesorter: 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot
Fadmodning: 15-18 mdr. 50% ny barrique

97-98/100 James Suckling
“This is a big move forward for Giscours. Full-bodied yet agile and fresh with tannins that are precise and integrated, with great beauty and length. Well-structured and vivid. Extremely fine yet defined tannins, and then it opens like a butterfly.”

97/100 Markus Del Monego MW
“A wine with elegance, persistence and complexity, displaying an excellent length.”

95-97/100 Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider
“Violets, roses and lilies merge with its array of spices, black cherries, black plums and black raspberries on the nose. Silky, fresh, and focused on its tannins. The wine focuses on its structure, balance, and refinement. Supple, and creamy, the finish displays its richness, ripe, deep fruits and energy in every lingering sip. The wine is a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, 13.6% ABV, pH 3.75. Harvesting took place September 1 to September 29. Yields were 27 hectoliters per hectare. Drink from 2027-2055.”

95-97/100 Vinous
“The 2022 Giscours was picked between 1 and 29 September, one of the earliest ever, with no SO2 added until blending and using bio-protection (yeasts) to protect the must. It has a delightful and sensual bouquet with lifted, violet and peony-scented blueberry and black cherry fruit. This is very well-defined and perhaps the purest I have encountered from barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with a disarming silky texture, harmonious and focused. It's mineral-driven with a poised and pixelated finish. Certainly, this represents one of the best wines from this Margaux estate in recent years, echoing their golden period of the 60s and early 70s. Tasted twice with consistent notes.”

95-97/100 The Drinks Business
“This is another Margaux classed growth with brilliant and captivating aromatics that instantly reveal the identity of the wine. My first scribbled note reads ‘a very Giscours florality’ and that is absolutely right. It’s like having a bunch of roses thrust into one’s hands unexpectedly. There’s also a gracious hint of lilac around the plump red and black cherry fruit and together that says ‘Giscours’ to me. Sumptuous in the mouth, with gossamer tannins and a fabulous evolution over the palate. This has a degree of refinement and subtlety that I think I’ve never previously experienced from Giscours. A wine on fire – even if the cool, focused precision of this wine fabulously disguises the heat of the year that made it, making one think of anything other than fire. Utterly brilliant. 95-97.”

96/100 Decanter
“A seriously impressive and beguiling Giscous in 2022 and one of the most elegant. A remarkable wine with gorgeous clarity and purity and just the most gentle seduction, even more so because it really doesn't feel as if it's trying too hard yet still delivering depth and complexity. Fresh and lifted, fragrant and so juicy but with textured tannins that give both the weight, structure and density to the quite bright, tangy, vibrant fruit. Nicely composed, feels quite powerful yet restrained and finessed offering lots of immediate drinking appeal but with a serious backbone that suggests long ageing too. Elegant, fineseed, subtle confidence with such cool minerality that gives freshness all the way through. It's not the most dense, or fleshy, but so refined. A compelling wine. Possible upscore in bottle. 3% Cabernet Franc completes the blend. 3.70pH. A yield of 27hl/ha, the lowest ever. No Sirene de Giscours this year. 100% grand vin. Ageing 17 months, 50% new oak. 10-15% press wine. Tasted twice.”

96/100 Vert de Vin Magazine
“The nose is mineral, elegant and offers a very nice finesse in its grain, a certain power in delicacy, depth, subtlety in its complexity as well as a very nice freshness. It reveals notes of bright wild blackcurrant, violet and slight hints of small bright berries associated with touches of raspberry, small wild red fruits, hints of star anise, bergamot as well as discreet hints of toasted/ caramelization and a discreet hint of iodized bass. The palate is fruity, fresh, mineral, elegant, racy and offers juiciness, fullness, delicacy, a nice iodized side, a tangy frame, tension, a nice harmony, purity as well as a fresh grain, very fine, taut and airy. All in delicacy. On the palate this wine expresses notes of juicy/pulpy blackberry, bright/fresh black berries and slight hints of violet plum associated with hints of raspberry, hints of creamy/fresh blue berries, a subtle hint almost roasted , sappy (in the background). The tannins are harmonious and chalky. A very discreet hint of roast in the middle of the mouth brings indulgence. Good length.”

96/100 Falstaff
“Deep dark ruby garnet, opaque core, violet reflections, delicate edge lightening. Delicately tobacco, fine herbal spices, a hint of cassis and heart cherries, mineral, candied violets in the background. Full-bodied, elegant, black cherries, blackberries, integrated, elegant tannins, fresh and persistent, delicate sweetness on the finish, shows the full potential of the Giscours terroir.”

95-96/100 Andrew Caillard MW
”Medium deep crimson. Very juicy and elemental with pure blackberry, blackcurrant, cacao aromas wity chinotto/ cola notes. Very fresh and pure with attractive juicy dark berry fruits, appealing chocolaty density and fresh mineral acidity. Finishes grainy firm. A very good vintage for Giscours. (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot 50% new oak)”

95-96/100 Terres de Vins

95-96/100 La Revue du Vin de France

94-96/100 Robert Parker
“With the 2022 Giscours, this estate takes another step up, delivering a deep and characterful wine redolent of cherries, dark berries, violets, peony and forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, broad shouldered and layered, it's deep and elegantly muscular, with impressive concentration, abundant but refined tannins and a structural authority reminiscent of the great Giscours vintages of the 1970s. Why is it so good? There are many reasons, but one is the high proportion of old vines—almost 60% of the blend deriving from vines that are over 50 years old—in a vintage that favored vines with deep, well-established root systems. Another is the increasing precision of harvesting at this address: Giscours's old vines are frequently co-planted with younger replacements that have filled any gaps in the ranks over the years; so, blocks are now picked in two or three passages instead of all at once, with the younger vines picked first.”

94-96/100 The Wine Independent
“A blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, and 3% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Giscours has a pH of 3.7 and 13.6% alcohol. It has a deep garnet-purple color and bursts with notes of baked black plums, warm cassis, and blackberry preserves, giving way to subtle suggestions of sassafras, roses, and Sichuan pepper. The delicately played medium-bodied palate is soft-spoken and refreshing, featured very fine, silt-like tannins and seamless freshness to frame the subtle red and black berry layers, finishing on a mineral note. If you love blockbusters, look elsewhere, this is all about grace. Note that no second wine (La Sirène de Giscours) was made in 2022 and the yield for Giscours was just 27 hl/ha.”

94-96/100 Jeb Dunnuck
“Clearly one of the finest vintages from this château, the 2022 Château Giscours reveals a dense purple hue to go with beautiful Cabernet-driven aromatics of smoky blue fruits, iron, lead pencil, and spring flowers, as well as an almost marine-like character developing with time in the glass. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has silky, perfectly integrated tannins, a great mid-palate, and outstanding length. It's a serious, age-worthy, incredibly impressive wine in the making.”

94-96/100 VV Wine
“Ripe raspberries, some cassis, violet blossoms in the scent. The palate is dense, robust, crunchy fruit, lots of tannins, this is finely woven, the wood is discreetly in the background, dense, fresh, juicy fruity finish. Can, indeed must mature something. Top!”

95/100 Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

94-95/100 Wine Maniacs

93-95/100 Alexandre Ma
“Château Giscours 2022 reveals an astonishing sense of freshness from the very beginning, making it difficult to associate with a hot and dry vintage. In my opinion, three factors contribute to achieving such delightful freshness: first, the early harvest (young Merlot began on September 1st, finished on September 29th); second, lowering the canopy height to reduce evaporation, resulting in more vibrant fruitiness; and lastly, gentle maceration to limit potassium extraction from the skins, thus enhancing acidity while maintaining lower pH levels. Considering all these factors, I've experienced a prismatic, dazzling Margaux in the passionate vintage of 2022. However, a new question arises at the same time: can this ethereal style prove as age-worthy as the 1982 Château Giscours? Only time will answer.”
