En Premier Grand Cru Classé i sin måske bedste årgang. Canon-la-Gaffelière giver dig toppen af Saint-Émilion 2020 nærmest fornærmende billigt, når du sammenligner med priserne for tilsvarende topbedømte nabovine.   

 “Kan du tale fransk, kan du også lave vin.”  Beskeden var klar, da tyskfødte Grev Stephan von Neipperg i 1985 fik overdraget Canon-la-Gaffelière af sin far.

Stephan allierede sig med ønologen Stephane Derenoncourt, og der blev investeret heftigt i forbedring af beplantninger og produktionsfaciliteter. Det ultimative duelighedsbevis kom i 2012, da rødvinen blev forfremmet til Premier Grand Cru Classé B.

Siden fulgte en plads som nr. 7 på Wine Spectators Top 100. De forjættede 100 point venter formentlig ikke længere ude i fremtiden, end at alvorlige prisstigninger før eller siden synes uundgåelige!

Siden 2014 certificeret økologisk, og der eksperimenteres ydermere med biodynamiske praksisser.

“On the nose, fruity, fresh, offering depth, a nice stretch, a nice finesse of grain as well as some richness and concentration in subtlety/balance. Notes of bright cassis, violet and more lightly rose with hints of lilac, bright blue fruits, fine hints of anise, aromatic herbs and a subtle hint of vanilla pod and Madagascar pepper. The palate is fruity, elegant and offers a beautiful freshness, a nice definition, precision, gourmandize, a little richness (in freshness and finesse), roundness, subtlety, plenitude, minerality and precision. On the palate it expresses notes of boysenberry, bright cassis and more lightly bright small blue fruits associated with hints of lilac, blueberry, subtle hints of saffron, black tea as well as discrete hints of tonka bean, toast and a discrete hint of toasted hazelnut. The tannins are precise and finely mellow. Good length. Presence of a little chewiness and a subtle sapid point on the finish/persistence. A wine full of finesse, delicacy and plenitude.”

Austere tannins at this point, plenty of limestone character, a little tight on the finish but with a velvet texture and promises to age with grace. A yield of 42hl/ha.”
